I've lately read a few articles that stated that people buy their computers based almost solely on price. Initially  I thought this to be a reasonable  way to buy a product , but after some contemplation I realized  how impossible it would be to make a smart purchase decision based on this by itself  .

The computer market is one of the fastest changing markets around, with commodities like sugar  and gold  almost the only thing that beats it for price fluctuations through each product line. While the general price break has become lower, the middle and upper level computer markets have for the most part stayed in the comparable $1,000 to $4000 area.

Because of the extreme pace of advancement within processors, there is a large  amount of movement of products through these price breaks, beginning  at the top end, and ending up at the bottom within around 36-48 months.

DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip sales hit $9.5 billion which was more than the first half of 2009 and became the third largest quarterly measure in 11 years, according to iSuppli. Prices went up 2.9% during the same period , which usually shows a 15% fall during this, the slowest time of the year for DRAM sales.

What could create such a raise during this ordinarily slow season? Hasn't their been a large track toward purchasing discount computer hardware?

Mike Howard, iSupply analyst states that sales and prices of DRAM chips "surged in the first quarter due to stronger-than anticipated demand for PCs and tight supplies. The strong performance bodes well for continued growth in 2010, possibly paving the way for the industry's greatest year in history."

The industry's greatest year in history? Is this just hopeful optimism or a wave that can create a true bull run ? Can other trends such as discount computer equipment alter this outlook ?

DRAM chip's ordinary selling prices are currently holding their velocity in the current quarter and supplies concerns for DRAM parts are becoming an problem as well.

It also appears that demand in the second half of the year will top the first half with the growth of supplies not keeping up with the increasing sales . Mike Howard states, "The first quarter of 2010 has positioned the industry for a bull run, the likes of which haven't been seen in more than a decade."

Raymond James, another analyst at iSuppli , predicts that DRAM sales could jump by 50% or even as much as 60% or more in the coming year .

For the last three years DRAM memory prices have created a monumental slump with new suppliers surpassing the increase in demand. But with the Worldwide Recession in full swing, numerous corporations have had to decommission old facilities and to run others below capability. Although net income are going up , manufacturers are presently not investing in any new factories or in increasing capacity at current facilities . This is in contrast to the major semiconductor chip manufacturers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing which is spending $4.8 billion on new factories or GlobalFoundries investing between $3-6 billion.

With the Labor Day weekend over  , we can look in the rearview  and look at  how the retailers did at shoving  their stock out the door.

With a few  exceptions, this Labor Day was below average  , but seemed to avoid  the large drop in sales some had forecasted with the sour news about  the economy.

Looking back on the ones that didn't do as  well we can see a very familiar pattern showing . Usually these locations had "too much" for the consumer to decide on, with multiple deals in multiple categories. Those that did well had 1 or very few pieces of merchandise  that were on a mega deal. So what's to learn besides where to find the latest discount computer equipment?

I believe  the clear  lesson learned is what major retailers do to force a purchase decision; they reduce the amount of choices you have.

If  you have to choose between 50 products that are about  the same with a comparable  price point, the purchase decision is overwhelming. More than likely you'll go ask a friend if they have used  one of these products, and then you'll purchase  the one they trust.

But during these "sales events" the best retailers give you as little choice as possible  . They may still have the selection of 50 products that are generally the same, but one is such a superior value that there is no choice at all once the decision to purchase has been made.

So...are discounts  to your benefit? Only if you were going to buy the product in the first place! Do you really want those discount computer parts, or is the packaging controlling  you?

Through this same strategy  , as well as consistent  in-store marketing, many times retailers have the ability  to convince you to make a purchase decision when little to no want really exists. You are there, and its "such a great deal" that you "can't pass it up". 

You feel good at the register, you've bought your new product at a great price, but then you get home. You open your new product and have to figure out how it will fit into your life. Do I really have room for it, will it take maintenance, do I want to accessorize it? Now that I've got a new discount computer, do I want to upgrade it with discount computer hardware?

Sometimes it doesn't fit in your life and you get to go through the return lines after one of these big holiday buying sprees . More buying fun.

So what's to learn? Only purchase  it if you really want it! Marketing will mold your mind if you are not careful; and price is never a sole reason to buy a product unless you like to throw your money and time away!
